Brandon is such a strange eater. He never really got into baby food. He pretty much will try whatever you put in his mouth, as long as it's not mushy like baby food. He wants texture and chunks. The problem is that he doesn't eat a whole lot at one time. Since I found out he is low in iron, I've made an extra effort to get him to eat. It's paying off because the last two nights he's eaten pretty well. Last night, he ate salmon, couscous and squash. Tonight, he had spaghetti O's and squash. He ate in only his diaper since he was wet from the water park. He wants to touch everything and then he rubs his hands in his hair afterwards. He tries to throw everything over the edge. As you can imagine he gets pretty messy, as do the floors. He goes straight in the bath after dinner and he loves that! (But, I don't like cleaning up afterwards!)
Before dinner, at the playground this evening, he was all over the place. He thinks he is a big kid, especially since he can walk with my help. It's so fun to see his expression. On our way home, we stopped at the water part and he motored up and down the little stream. I just hold his hands and he walks in the direction he wants to go. It was funny because he walked straight in to the sprinkler fountain and then got cold water in his face and he gasped and walked straight out in double time.

Watch me eat...

Blast from the Past

We had a visit from Kelly Mason yesterday. I was friends with her family in Midland, Michigan. They live in Connecticut now. It was so great to see her and catch up a little. It was a short visit but it made me happy. Brandon got to meet Kelly and he liked her! Kelly's youngest daughter, Emily, is getting married in August. I can hardly believe it since I actually had her in my achievement day class when she was 11. Now she's 18! Time sure flies. Kelly was so nice and brought Brandon a talking Cookie Monster and an ABC Book.

Another first
Brandon can't get enough of trying to stand/walk these days, so I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that tonight while he was crying trying to go to sleep, we walked into the room to find him standing up in his crib. The side rail is still lowered, so it's probably a good thing we didn't find him in a heap on the floor. I guess all good things have to come to an end.
I can't wait for the day that he can crawl out of the crib... : (

Sad wake up call
Brandon had his 9 month check up last Wednesday. He weighed in at 22 lbs and 9 oz and was 28 1.2 inches long. I forgot my camera because I was in a hurry to get there. I had to wake up Brandon early from his nap so I was rushed. I only mention that because I didn't get a 9 month photo at the Dr's. I took one later on our bed so you can see his size.
They gave him a tb shot and took blood from his arm for normal testing. They said unless I got a call, not to worry about the results.
I got a call on Monday.
After playing phonetag for a few hours, I was finally able to talk to the doctor. Brandon has low iron and is anemic. Apparently, this can happen in babies this age because from about 6 months, he used up the store of iron from me and should get iron from food. Apparently the iron in breastmilk after this, is not enough. Since Brandon is eating table food...but still in small quantities, and isn't getting formula that is fortified with iron, he is low. He was prescribed with iron vitamin drops that he needs to take daily for 3 months. And also, I need to feed him egg yolks, green veggies, particularly kale etc. because it's high in iron. But with it, he needs to eat vitamin C for absorption. And along with that Fat. *sigh* The question is: how do you get all this into a baby in a high enough quantity, when the baby still barely eats anything?
This morning found Brandon and I at Fairway. We bought various iron rich foods, including Kale. How do you cook Kale? Apparently, everyone wants to know. When I was in line at the seafood department to buy Salmon, the butcher asked me that very question, "Maam, if you don't mind me asking, how the heck do you cook Kale?" I answered back, "I guess I'll find out...my son apparently needs to eat it." We all started laughing. A sweet older woman, told me to steam it and mix in lemon juice or apple sauce with it. My mom would probably know. She probably eats Kale every day.
So, I just boiled some eggs, so the egg yolks will be ready. I found a recipe for it, if it's good, I'll post it.

It just makes you sad...to realize that your baby is lacking something due to you. It's a sad sad day when you realize your power breast milk is not enough. He's growing up...and so must I. Now, I need to be the mom that feeds her child good foods and not just assume he is getting it. So, it's a sad wake up call for me.

a Saturday in the life of brandon
So, I'm a lucky baby. I live in NYC and it's so much fun! On a typical day, I stop at the fruit stand by my house (this one is near 68th and Columbus) and mom buys me a banana. I love bananas! It costs 25 cents.
We usually end the day at the park playground. Mine is on 69th and Central Park! But since today is Saturday, I went in the morning with mom and dad. Dad went for a run and came back all sweaty! We cooled off in the fountain. I love to walk up and down the little stream.

In the evening, we went to dinner at Isabella's on Columbus and 79th. I was feeling really wiggly but luckily mom and dad and I were sitting next to a french door that led outside. So, I was in and out all dinner! It was fun for me...not sure if it was fun for them. Afterwards, we went to see Mary, Craig, Parker and the new baby Miles. We wanted to say hi and drop off some Alice Teacup Scones. I had a great time playing with Parker's toys. Miles is cute!

First steps?
Brandon has been bound and determined to walk lately. He had lost interest in crawling, and wanted to stand and walk (with our help) everywhere. This afternoon, he was standing about a foot away from our couch - he loves to stand by himself...makes him feel BIG - and turned towards the couch and took 2 steps to get there and support himself. His first solo steps!! I called Lynda over because she had missed it, and he proceeded to walk along the couch by himself to get to Mom - another first.
So, big day for the little guy, and getting close to the end of the world as we know it for Mom and Dad.

Firsts: First haircut, first stand, first crawl, first attitude to dad
Tonight Brandon did his first legitimate crawl. He kind of scoots forward on his hands and knees then pushes up his little bum, shifting on his hip and then back down. (No video coverage though, the camera battery is dead.) Up until tonight, he was crawling backwards. But, really, what he loves to do: WALK. He walks with our assistance and he can stand on his own. It's so cute...when we say, "No hands!" and wave our hands, he lets go and stands there looking very proud!
He got his first haircut on Tuesday night - 3 nights ago. It definitely helps him see better. His rat tail is gone too.

This morning, Ryan fed Brandon breakfast but Brandon didn't really want to eat very much. Brandon swung at Ryan's hand and knocked the food all over. Ryan gave Brandon a stern look and reprimand. When I came out, Brandon immediately wanted me to hold him. As soon as I did, Brandon turned and gave such a look to Ryan and wouldn't go to him for at least an hour. What an attitude!

14 days of family ending in NYC
After the SLC wedding, we came back to NYC. My parents, Alex and Sam were there having just returned from Palmyra and Niagra Falls. It was fun to have my family see Brandon, though, he was so tired and a little skittish from the trip. My mom was able to stay a couple of days longer and we had a great time with her. Ryan and I even managed to see a late night showing of Dark Knight. Thanks MOM!

14 days of family continues...at Dillon Beach
We left Tammy's and went on up to Dillon Beach. We arrived with Dave and Stephanie before anyone else, so we had a chance to check out the beach as the sun started to set. I snapped a photo of this pretty flower on the path down to the beach.

Anyone wants some seaweed soup? (besides Lynda)

This finger has lots of uses.

I told you I was hungry!

Now, what was dad saying about this stuff?
